How is Holy Heek in Sevilla in 2022

The origins of the penitential Holy Week in Seville are to be found in the 16th century. It is one of the city’s two biggest annual festivals. During the Holy Week religious brotherhoods organize processions all over the city. At this time you can see hundreds of members of the processions who are dressed in penitential robes with capirotes, tall, pointed hoods with eye-holes. They acompany their saint images on the way to the Cathedral.

Brotherhoods that participate in the Holy Week

There is 58 brotherhoods in Seville that participate in the Holy Week. Some of them, like for example True Cross or The Silence have more then 500 years.
Among the most famous are those that participate in La Madrugá, such as Brotherhood of Great Power /Hermandad del Gran Poder/ or Brotherhood of La Macarena. Sevillan people are very passionate and emotional about their saint figures.

The Official Race

All of the processions pass through an official viewing area which occupies some of the city’s main streets, beginning in Campana, followed by Calle Sierpes, Plaza San Francisco, and Avenida de la Constitución, before reaching the Cathedral. Once they already leave the Cathedral, they come back with the images of their saints to their churches.

The pasos, treasures of the Holy Week

Sevillians acompany the images dressed as Nazarenes, carrying candles, crosses and other elements of the brotherhoods. Each one has its own dress in different colours.

The costaleros are the ones who are carrying the pasos. As they are all inside the structure and hidden from the external view by the curtain, the paso seems to be moving by itself. The groups are formes by 30- 40 costaleros.
Another important figure of Holy Week in Seville are the capataces. They are responsable for directing the costaleros and keeping the pace of the procession.

Some of the pasos are acompanied by music bands to interpret procesional marches. The most popular ones are Las Cigarreras or Las Tres Caìdas which are also known nationally.

1.- Plaza de España

You don´t need a lot of time to walk through the most famous and beloved gardens of the city, which were donated to the Sevillians by María Luisa Fernanda de Borbón in 1914. A detour from its central avenue leads us to the statue of Bécquer. The best thing to do, before entering the nearby Plaza de España, is to get lost in its labyrinthine paths, ponds, fountains and abundant vegetation. The Plaza de España was designed for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 by the architect Aníbal González, and maintains all the gallantry and romantic halo that have made it an absolutely unique space. Boat rides and waffle stands are ideal for a sunny day during fall.

2.- Cathedral

The largest Gothic temple in the world stands in the heart of the historic center with its impressive facade, imposing porticoes and a breathtaking interior, where the main altar, the scene of the dance of the sixes, is a few meters from the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Guided tours are organized every day, except for some holidays. This tour takes you to the Gothic Cathedral, the sacristies and the Renaissance chapter house, the treasury, the Giralda, the orange tree courtyard and the Church of El Salvador, located in the Plaza del Salvador, another of the city’s essential stops. One can also visit its roofs.

3.- Giralda

The majestic Almohad tower that crowns the Cathedral concentrates 800 years of our history. For many years it dominated the city’s skyline, with its 101 meters, a record snatched by the Seville Tower. The Giraldillo is its proud weather vane, whose replica can be admired at the Puerta del Principe.

4.- Museum of Fine Arts

The most important museum in Seville is also the second largest art gallery in Spain, with a valuable collection of paintings from the Baroque school (Zurbarán, Murillo and Valdés Leal), and major guest exhibitions. Admission is free for EU residents,  It is open on Sundays, so it is a good day to visit the art market in the Museum Square.

5.- Torre del Oro

The 13th century defensive tower is the tireless watchtower of the Guadalquivir and the pretty girl of Seville. A common picture that tourists take is from the nearby San Telmo Bridge to capture the image of the Torre del Oro in the foreground, the Giralda on the right and the Torre Sevilla on the left. Inside it contains the Maritime Museum of Seville, which can be visited for free on Mondays.

6.- The Royal Alcazar of Seville

One of the oldest palaces in use in the world, it is the most emblematic Arab monument of the city, with an interior decorated with royal gardens that have been the scene of numerous filming, such as the Game of Throne series. In addition from its Islamic tinsel and the baroque imprint left by the various reforms, it is a space of cultural activity of the first order that in summer lives one of its moments of greatest splendor with its traditional cycle of concerts under the stars.

7.- Legends and labyrinths of Santa Cruz

A labyrinth of narrow streets in the old Jewish quarter, which lead us to stately homes, typical courtyards, zaguanes, and squares, such as Santa Cruz, where a plaque reminds us that the remains of the famous painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo are located there. In the “Barrio de Santa Cruz” there are other very popular and beautiful corners, such as the Plazuela de Santa Marta, the Patio de Banderas or the Callejón del Agua.

8.- The Casa Consistorial of Seville

In the 15th century, with the discovery of America and the importance and wealth the city was acquiring, it was decided to create a new headquarter for the city hall, larger and of better quality. It was decided to place the Seville City Hall in the Plaza de San Francisco, which was a commercial area. High-end stores in the Plaza Nueva, where the Plateresque Town Hall is located, are the prelude to the commercial display of Tetuán and Sierpes streets. Although franchises are taking over these roads, there are still traditional stores capable of making us live a beautiful return to the past.

9 . Las Setas de Sevilla

Metropol Parasol is a wooden structure located at “La Encarnación”. Designed by Jürgen Mayer, is a mega-gastrobar and subway museum, Antiquarium, all in one under six impressive umbrellas (parasols) that resemble a giant sea sponge. It is an important meeting point (day and night) of the city.

10.- Triana

Triana is the best known quarter of the city, following the historical centre, for its closeness to it and for being situated on the other side of
the Guadalquivir river. Our river divides the city into two river banks and ​Triana has the best views of the old town for its priviledge location.

When you are back from the old town to the Triana neighborhood,  admire the river from the Isabel II Bridge (from the Eiffel school), or its bridge from the river, or from Betis street is a “must”. Also, to have tapas in any of the old or new bars in the surroundings: Las Golondrinas, La Azotea, La cazuela de Manuela or Victoria 8.

Note that to enter Triana is to do so in Castile Street, at one end is the Basilica Minor of one of the Most Devoted Christs of Seville Holy Week: the Cachorro, the summit work of baroque imagery. Very close to the church, the bar ‘Sol y sombra’ feeds its fame with its home cooking, its fish and seafood and its exquisite pork from the Sierra de Huelva.

Flamenco is a fundamental part of the history of a society: the Andalusian people. Flamenco is soul, it is a way of being, it is a way of expressing oneself before life, is music, voice, dance, poetry and feeling. It has become a popular art that crosses borders and is known all over the world.

The origins of Flamenco

Flamenco is a valuable treasure that according to some studies, comes from the Greeks, Christians and Muslims and it was weaving through the crossbreeding and the relationship between these cultures in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. In the late nineteenth century, the gypsy people joined this culture. They make the flamenco music known through the singing cafés. The first one opens in Seville in 1885. Previously it was a music and family dance.

Since then it is forged to this day a way of living, a way of expressing oneself and a philosophy of life for many people. For Sevilla It also becomes a popular art and folklore such as Easter or the April fair.

Flamingos (Tablao Flamenco) are a real depiction of what happened centuries ago in the singing cafés.

Flamenco in Seville

Seville has many corners to enjoy flamenco. In the old town you can enjoy several shows every night in historical surroundings, like houses palaces and Sevillians patios. Also in Peñas de Barrio and bars of associations are held parties aimed at the local public.

Once every two years the main event is held in Seville and also in the world around flamenco: the Seville Biennial.

“La Bienal de Sevilla”

The Biennale, from its beginnings, tries to gather all the styles of flamenco, from the most classical to the most avant-garde. From a singing background, to an orchestra with choreography.

This year from the 6th to the 30th of September, a total of eleven spaces, including the bullring, the Port of Seville, the Turina space and the recently inaugurated Cultural factory, will be transformed to host very diverse spectacles of companies and artists of the Flamenco.

The Alameda Theatre will become the Alameda Café, like the old flamenco singing Cafés, for the biennial nights.

Seville “ las setas”

Seville “Las Setas “(Mushrooms) are one of the main attractions of the city. It is one of the most visited monuments, and according to a recent survey conducted by the Tourist Board, this space is arousing more interest than the Cathedral among tourists. As an architectural refurbishment, innovation and technological symbol, “Las Setas” are the world´s largest wooden made structure and they are located on the northern area of the old city, previously known as Encarnacion Square. Let´s find out a little more about this charming building.

“ Las setas” origins

Seville “ Las Setas” were originally referred to as Metropol Parasol Space and they were designed in order to renew Encarnacion Square. It aimed to link two independent areas located either side of the road, where cars usually drive, and to shade a leisure and entertainment area rich in history in our city.
Initially, it was not welcomed between neighbours due to an inadequate design completely opposed to the classicism of historical monuments, but it is being slowly accepted as a first move towards modernization of the Andalusian capital.
The structure was inaugurated in 2011 and due to a series of problems in its completion, the price increased from its initial budget to 86 million euros.

Its architect: jürgen mayer-hermann

The project was assigned to Jürgen Mayer-Hermann, as a winner in the International Contest of Ideas Encarnacion de Sevilla in 2004.
Jürgen is a german architect and artist, he was born in 1965 in Stutgartt. Some of his works were presented at the MOMA in New York and he was awarded for several of his works, as Mensa Moltke, University of Karlsruhe, before the building of “ Las Setas”.

Parasol construction and design

Having a size of 150  long, 70 wide and 26 metres high ,  Seville “Las Setas “ stand as one of the great monuments in the historical centre. As previously mentioned, it was basically built from wood, it took more than 7.500 wooden elements linked together with steel structures.

One enchanting walk

“Las Setas” construction were intended to provide a cultural area in the city centre . Its main square was designed for major events and the cellar holds royal ruins belonging to the Roman period, it is called Antiquarium . Encarnacion´s market is placed inside, where you could enjoy our local cuisine.

This area is plenty of terraces, restaurants, cafeterias and bars to enjoy Seville evening and night.

On the top of the building, there is a viewpoint, which is a lovely walk through Seville sky. A tour through the top of Metropol Parasol that overlooks 360º views of the city, perfect to get a more accurate picture of its size and morphology.

There are free visits to this space excluding the Museum and the Viewpoint, they offer a unique entertainment city experience at a small fee.

There is always something new to discover in Seville, in summer and in winter as well. In our dear Seville, every corner has got its own charm, but there are also places where you can find a great concentration of art, namely the museums.

Here is a brief excursus about the most characteristic museums of the Andalusian capital.

MUSEO DE BELLAS ARTES

Undoubtedly, this is the most relevant museums of the city, being the second most important art gallery in Spain. It is located in the Plaza del Museo, where each Sunday takes place an exhibition of works of art by local artists, who put on sale their paintings and sculptures.

The same building its significant in itself, being the ancient Convento de la Merced. After the expropriation of the XVII century, it has been turned into a museum, gathering highly valuable works of art. The visitor can discover masterpieces going from the Sevillian Baroque to the art of the XIX century, including some Medieval paintings too.

To name just a few classical painters whose works of art are on display in the museum: Diego Velázquez, Zurbarán, Herrera el Viejo, Gerard David, Caraciolo, Murillo, etc.

It is worth mentioning also that, being the year of Murillo, the museum offers a brand new exhibition of works of the Sevillian painter, and works on permanent display as well, such as La Virgen del Pañuelo or La Concepción Grande.

MUSEO ARQUEOLÓGICO

This museum is located in the group of buildings of the 1929 EXPO, since it has been moved here due to the increase of its collections, after finding place in the Real Alcázar and in the Convento de la Merced in the meantime.

The museum allows going over a part of history through the objects and sculptures coming from the Prehistory, the Copper Age, the Bronze Age, etc. It is fascinating being able to contemplate so many indigenous artifacts and true treasures like the Carambolo, made of gold.

MUSEO TAURINO

It was inaugurated for the Countess of Barcelona in 1989 and it is located within the walls of the bullring. In this particular museum the tradition of the bullfighting is addressed by means of paintings, posters, objects and sculptures distributed in four rooms.

The visitor can visit the museum and the main areas of Plaza de Toros, too.

MUSEUM OF ARTS AND POPULAR CUSTOMS

The “Museum of Arts and Popular Customs” is located in a beautiful Mudéjar building in María Luisa Park, built on the occasion of the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, which is a spectacle in itself.

This museum houses a valuable collection of objects that illustrate the traditions and everyday life in Andalusia and other regions of Spain. This includes traditional costumes, musical instruments, objects related to fishing, agriculture, and craftsmanship, as well as elements related to local festivities and rituals.

Our recommendation is to visit it as it provides a fascinating insight into the everyday life and customs of Seville throughout the years.

 

MUSEO DEL BAILE FLAMENCO

Located in the oldest part of the city of Seville and set in a building of the XVIII century, you can find this magical museum. It was inspired by the flamenco dancer Cristina Hoyos, in order to let everybody know this art so authentic: the flamenco. We can go deep into this wonderful world through performances of singing, dancing and guitar playing, by means of audiovisual aids arranged in every room of the museum.

Casa Palacio Guardiola

Located in the famous Puerta de Jerez, the construction of this palace house dates back to the nineteenth century, in the heyday of Sevillian romanticism. It was ordered to built this palace by Andrés Parladé and Sánchez de Quirós, then Conde de Aguiar.
This building is a great representative of the regionalist style, it went ahead to approximately 20 years. It has all the details of the stately homes of the time, patio stop, on the one side a horse yard on the other, in which we can find the main patio, the garden and the halls.
Currently it is dedicated to the celebration of events of considerable importance.

Casa de Salinas

This magnificent house is located in the historic center of Seville, in the neighborhood of Santa Cruz. just a few steps from the Boutique Hotel Casa del Poeta. Despite belonging to the sixteenth century, this palace house had to be deeply restored at the beginning of the 20th century by the Salinas family, which restored its original appearance.
It combines Renaissance style with Gothic and Mudejar, which makes it a real pleasure for the senses. Now it also houses celebrations that do not go unnoticed.

Palacio de las Dueñas

Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, Las Dueñas was named after the currently dissapeared monastery of Santa María de las Dueñas, placed in the adjoining plot and demolished in 1868. Its Origin was the Place-house of the Pineda, lords of Casa Bermeja, one of the most important families of Seville of those times.
In the XIX Century, Dueñas became a guesthouse, dividing its rooms and halls with walls and covering the coffered ceiling. One of the guest, and property administrator of Las Dueñas, was Antonio Machado Álvarez father of the famous poet Antonio Machado, who was born in Las Dueñas in 1875.
In the 20th Century Las Dueñas has been meeting point for members of the European royal families and international personalities of the culture, politics and art. Distinguished people such as the Empress Eugenia de Montijo, Lord Holland, Eduardo VIII and his bother Jorge VI, Alfonso XIII, Jacqueline Kennedy, Wallis Simpson, Grace Kelly and her husband Rainiero de Mónaco, among others.

Casa Palacio de los Pinelo

It was built in the sixteenth century by the Pinelo family, Genoese navigators who were living in Seville and came to occupy almost a block between the Segovia and Abades street. This palace house is one of the standards of Renaissance Seville and is still the seat of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. Specifically, it is integrated into the set of entities that are associated with the Institute of Spain and whose objective is the promotion and dissemination of Fine Arts through various activities.
Its origins take place in the Academy of Painting constituted by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Francisco de Herrera el Mozo, Juan de Valdés Leal and other artists of the time to promote the teaching of fine arts.

Palacio de la condesa de Lebrija

This palace has an area of about 2000 square meters and dates back to the 16th century, when it was built as a Sevillian manor house. In it you can not only contemplate its beautiful mosaics, but also its rooms full of archaeological remains of incalculable value such as vases, amphoras, columns, vessels and sculptures. Other attractions are its walls, adorned with decorative elements of Arabic trace, its plateresque ornaments or its Andalusian façade and floor.
At present, the Lebrija Palace has its doors open to the public in guided visits in which you can admire a fabulous collection of Roman and Greek remains and unique pieces such as, a Van Dick, a painting of the School of Murillo and a Sorolla or its beautiful library which contains more than 4000 volumes.
